About the URL Slug Generator
A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a page, like /blog/how-to-write-a-headline. Good slugs are lowercase, use hyphens between words and contain only letters and numbers, which makes them easy to read, share and type.
This generator lowercases each line, converts accented letters to plain ones (é → e), replaces “&” with “and”, turns every other symbol or space into a separator and removes separators from the ends. Each line becomes its own slug, so you can convert a whole list of titles at once. Google recommends hyphens rather than underscores for separating words in URLs.
How to use it
- Paste one title per line.
- Choose a hyphen or underscore separator.

Frequently asked questions
Should I remove words like “a” and “the”?
It is optional. Shorter slugs are tidy, but keep enough words for the slug to describe the page.
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators, while underscores can join words together.
What happens to non-Latin characters?
Characters that cannot be converted to plain letters, such as Chinese or Arabic script, are removed. For those languages, consider writing the slug by hand.
Is the text I enter kept private?
Yes. The URL Slug Generator runs entirely in your web browser, so your text is never uploaded to or stored on our servers. Like most free websites, TextForge shows ads from Google, which may use cookies. See our Privacy Policy for details.
